about

El Susurro es un Misterio is the debut EP by Xim Jim, a project by Cusco-based multidisciplinary artist Ximena Valdivia, better known for her documentary film Lima Grita (Lima Screams), an ecstatic and visually thrilling journey through Peru’s capital city’s spaces, as marginalised communities make beautiful music and political protests are backed by fierce electronic sounds. Surrounded and inspired by such a musical environment, it was only natural that Ximena would eventually make the jump from filmmaking to music – and what an impressive jump it has been.

Originally composed and recorded on February of 2020 as a birthday gift for herself, El Susurro es un Misterio is, according to Ximena, another film, only that this time it is led by sounds instead of moving images. The story begins, ironically, with Fin del Mundo (The End of the World), perhaps the roughest track of the EP – a reminiscence of Lima’s underground electronic community. It is followed by Marcha Lunar (Moon Walk), a love scene softly whispered over a canvas of continuous Latin-American percussion and a mattress of friendly organ melodies. Subsequently, Sirena Punk (Punk Mermaid) allows us into the darkest corners of the protagonist’s mind – late night thoughts that doesn’t let them repose. But a new day will come and with it, Mambos Míos (My Mambos), in which the plan flute gently dances while the first rays of sun shower with orange light the snowy Andean mountains, reminding the main character that, despite recent struggles, everything is going to be alright – an otherworldly experience that could only happen in a magical city like Cusco. Canción de Cuna (Lullaby) is the epilogue of this story, a short and playful melody in the style of some of the most popular environmental music works from Japan.

El Susurro es un Misterio is set to release on the 3rd of December on limited edition cassette and digital format, featuring artwork and layout by Peruvian visual artist Jonathan Castro Alejos.
